Overnight Stays in the Black Forest 2019–2024

Comprehensive market analysis 2019–2024: The Black Forest set a historic record in 2024 with 23.32 million overnight stays – over 10% above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. Hotels account for 63.2% of all overnight stays.

Historic record in 2024

The Black Forest has established itself as Germany's most successful tourism region. With 23.32 million overnight stays in 2024 — growth of +1.1% vs. 2023 and over 10% above pre-pandemic 2019 — the region clearly exceeded expectations. Hotels account for 63.2% of all overnight stays.

Development 2019 to 2024

Starting from a base of 21.2 million overnight stays in 2019, the region experienced a pandemic-driven collapse of up to −40.1% in 2020/21. Recovery, however, was faster than in other German tourism regions. By 2022, a return to pre-crisis levels was visible, 2023 set a new all-time record, and 2024 pushed even higher.

Implications for hospitality real estate

The Black Forest's strong recovery creates a sustained favorable environment for hotel and restaurant properties in the region — making it one of the few areas in Germany that has not just returned to pre-pandemic levels but significantly surpassed them.
